The Result Of My Color Therapy

In my last post I shared a bit of color therapy I was doing, and the results have been surprisingly pleasant!

This infinity scarf is my new favorite thing. Not only can it be worn a variety of ways, but it's super soft and the color puts me in an instantly good mood!

Check out the pattern here at Moogly's blog. I love love love all of her patterns. And this one is super easy, and perfect for beginners!

I also have been playing with the yarn I recently got from Toil and Trouble on Etsy. (I highly reccomend buying from her on Etsy, she does such wonderful work!!)

After I rolled the beautiful skein of yarn into a ball, I started on a simple hat. Sometimes I just need to get a feel for the yarn before I decide what to do with it. A hat seemed like a good starting point.

Then I had a lightbulb moment, and decided to make myself a triangle granny scarf. I can't remember where I found the pattern but it is very easy and it came out beautifully!

Now I have plenty of colorful scarves to keep me warm this winter, and to brighten my spirits!

Color Therapy

Now that it's almost halfway through December, the winter blues are really starting to kick in. Luckily I have lots of pretty yarn to make me smile. There's something almost magical about the way a skein of bright colored yarn can cheer me up.

I'm not the only one.. Right?

My newest purchase from Toil and Trouble on Etsy!

Once I started noticing myself feeling a little more down in the dumps than usual, I got an idea. Since every time I looked at my stash I would smile, I decided to grab a basket and put a few of my favorite skeins in it, and bring it upstairs with me (I keep most of my stash confined to my basement).

That basket has been hanging out in random places in the living room and kitchen, and ya know what? I never look at it and go "Ugh, there's another thing I need to put away!". I almost always smile.

Right around this time I started reading "Crochet Saved My Life" by Kathryn Vercillo. I've been following her blog Crochet Concupiscence for a few months, and when she announced the release of her newest book, I knew I had to have it. Needless to say, since battling depression myself, it's nice to hear others stories and accounts with how crochet helped them deal with and overcome many different illnesses.

In the book she mentions the use of 'color therapy' a few times, and this really intrigued me. I never realized how much a simple thing like the color of yarn could improve my mood.

Yesterday was one of those days.
I found a skein of brightly colored Simply Soft yarn hiding in a corner, and I decided to make something with it. Instead of using the skein as it was, I sat and rolled it into a ball, focusing on the beautiful bright teal color.
I slowly felt my mood improving.

The start of my infinity scarf!

Using this pattern just released by Moogly the night before, I started on this super easy infinity scarf. The bright, happy color mixed with the simplicity of the pattern made for some wonderful relaxation time for me. I'm also looking forward to wearing this out!
Hopefully it will carry that bright and happy feeling wherever it goes.

My FAVORITE Thing to Make!

Hey there Hookers! (;

I hope everyone who lives up north is enjoying the cool weather! We haven't had much snow here in CT, but it's the perfect time of year for me to break out my favorite headband!

I love this thing so much, I cant say enough about it. It keeps my ears warm, and it adds just a pop of color to whatever plain outfit I may be wearing that day. And lets face it, it's SUPER cute!

SO now I've convinced you to make one right?!
All you have to do is head on over to this blog. She will tell you where you can find the FREE patterns for both the headband and the flower.

I also created this FREE pattern for another ear warmer that I love to wear.

Still want the headband, but not sure you want to do all the work? Or just don't know how? Check out my Etsy shop! I happen to have a few for sale just because I love making them so much.

Using Crochet In Every Day Life

Many people out there thing crocheting is just for grandmas. I can't even count the number of eyebrow raises I've gotten after saying "I crochet".
it seems like they're thinking "What are you, 80?"

Then once I begin showing them my completed things, they almost always exclaim "make me one!"

What makes crochet fun for me is finding unique ways to use crochet in my daily life. Around my house you will see crochet everywhere. There's some hats by the door, a shawl on the couch, pot holders in the kitchen, wash cloths in the bathroom. Part of me feels a sense of accomplishment every time I use something I've made, and it feels good! Another part of me is all giddy about what I can come up with next!

So in case you're in a rut with crochet, here's a few unique ideas to use crochet in your every day life!

This is just a small example of many different things you can make! Not your typical hat/scarf/afghan now is it? (;

Flower Coaster Free Pattern

Happy Saturday everyone!
Here's what we woke up to in our house this morning..
SNOW!

Christmas is now fast approaching. Have you made your gift list yet? I'm planning on making as many gifts as I can for my family and friends, so that means lots of cute little projects that I can finish in one sitting.

I came up with this pattern after making a few mug cozys with this yarn. I thought it would make a perfect flowery coaster, so here it is! Cotton yarn is preferred to absorb any condensation or spills, but I used acrylic for these. They can be machine washed, so I'm not too worried about them getting dirty.

Of course, this pattern is super simple, so even if you don't crochet, just check out a few how to videos on youtube and you can get started!

Card Sleeve Free Crochet Pattern! (Use for gift cards!)

Hello everyone!

I really love this time of year. The holidays right around the corner, the anticipation and excitement, and of course getting to bundle up under a nice cozy blanket with some tea!

I've been really trying to enjoy this time with my family, especially by beginning some new holiday traditions! Because of that I will probably be posting less frequently, but the ideas are still flowing!
I've got my notebook full of ideas written down so when the holidays are over I can get back in full swing!

In the meantime, I've been working on something I like to call an instant gratification project. Meaning I can sit down and start something and be ale to finish and use it within 5-10-15-20 minutes.

This took me about 5-10 minutes to whip up. I was waiting around for Jude to wake up from his nap so we could go grocery shopping. Looking for something to keep me busy, and remembering the discussion between me and my hubby about the debit card always going missing - I blame it on the mommy brain - I decided to make a little sleeve to give it a home.
When thinking about design I wanted something flat that could fit in my back pocket and easy to access (as a mom I usually don't have two hands to undo a button and slip out my cards, then button it back up when im done. Try doing that holding a one year old trying to grab your card out of your hand! Ha).

Alright, enough chit chat, let's get on with this pattern. I don't even know if I should call it that, it's so easy, and I'm sure someone has already come up with it, but I'll share anyways! ;)

What you need
A small amount of sock yarn
F sized crochet hook

Pattern

Chain 11
SC in 2nd chain from hook and each ch after.
You will now work in rounds, so place a stitch marker to remember where your row begins/ends, and continue single crocheting around.
Yup, that's it! When you reach the desired height finish off and weave in your ends.

Now you can shop away with a bright colored place for all your necessary cards. You could even make a few to house gift cards for the upcoming gift giving season!

Enjoy! And as always if you have any questions leave a comment below! I love to hear from you :)

Ribbed Headband/Ear Warmer - Free Crochet Pattern

Ever since making the granny stripe headband, I've been wearing them every time I leave the house! My hair is almost always up in a bun, so I don't usually wear hats. Therefore these headbands that double as earwarmers are perfect for me. I hope there are others out there like me!

My only problem with the granny stripe headband is, although it keeps my head sufficiently warm, it does have holes in it. I foresee this being a problem in the future, so I decided to whip up something a little more warm and cozy.

This headband (like most of my patterns) is fully customizable to you. You decide how wide you want it, how big (or small!) to make it, and of course, whatever pretty color you want on it also! Add a flower or other embellishment, or leave it as is. Its completely up to you!

This headband uses a few 'fancy' stitches if you're a beginner. But don't be intimidated just yet! I've included some video tutorials so you can really get the hang of it. Once you learn them, you can make all kinds of advanced looking goodies! (seriously though, isn't it fun to impress your family and friends?!)

Ribbed Headband/Ear Warmer Pattern

Materials
I Hook (5.5mm)
Worsted Weight Yarn

Special Stitches (click on the link for a video tutorial!)

FSC 47 (or adjust to fit comfortably around your head)
CH 1, turn. SC down each FSC. Join to your first SC to make a round.
CH 3, DC in each stitch around. Slip stitch to CH 3 to complete the round.
CH 3, *FPDC in post of next DC in previous row. DC in next st.* Repeat around. End with a FPDC, and slip stitch into the ch 3 to complete the round.
Repeat the previous row until your headband is as wide as you like.
Ch 1, SC in each stitch around. Slip stitch to complete the round.
Repeat previous row once more.
Finish off and weave in ends.

I hope you enjoy the end result as much as I do! Try experimenting with different a different sized hook or a different yarn weight. I'd love to see what you come up with!

Quick and Easy Pop of Color Headband - Free Pattern!

Ever wish you could quickly and easily add a pop of color to your outfit?

Have some bright colored yarn scraps that need a purpose?

Then I have the pattern for you! I made this headband in less than 5 minutes, and after making a few of these, you can too! It really is that easy. I promise!

What you need:
A small amount of worsted weight yarn
Size I hook

Pop Of Color Headband Free Pattern

Make a chain just long enough to wrap around your head where you would like the headband to sit. Slip stitch into the first chain to make a loop.
Ch 2, HDC in each ch around. Slip stitch to first HDC and fasten off.

Weave in your ends and that's it! No, really! I'm enjoying making them in a bunch of different colors so I can just grab a color that coordinates with my outfit and run out the door!

Market Bag - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello my fellow hookers!!

Today I have for you this very simple, sturdy market bag, which is perfect for those spring, summer, and fall trips to the farmers market! I always enjoy picking out fresh, seasonal produce to later make into healthy meals for myself and my family. So why not have a light, breathable bag to carry all my goodies?!

If you know how to single crochet and chain, you can easily make this! But watch out, soon your friends and family will want one too!

Market Bag Pattern

Materials
6 MM (Size J) Hook
2-3 Skeins of Lily Sugar and Creme Cotton Yarn

Notes: After the beginning chain, you will single crochet along both sides of the chain, creating a round. Beginning at row 6, you will work in rounds, without joining. Place a stitch marker in that spot to remember where you started. The handles are worked separately then sewn onto the bag. If you have any
questions please feel free to ask!

Chain 31

Round 1: SC in second chain from hook, and each ch across (30 SC). make 3 SC in the last ch, and continue to SC around the opposite side of the chain. Make 2 SC in last st and sl st to first SC to complete the round.
Round 2: Ch 1, SC in each st around. sl st to first sc.
Round 3: Repeat round 2
Round 4: *Ch 6, skip 2 st, slip stitch into next st.* Repeat around.

Round 5: At the end of round 4, instead of sl st into the next st, you will sl st into the first chain 6 sp. ch 6 and continue to sl st into the next ch 6 space.
Continue doing this until your bag is the length you desire. Keep in mind, as the bag gets filled it will stretch (this is why i use cotton yarn, less stretch).

Finishing round: Ch 1, SC 5 times in each chain space. Slip stitch to beginning chain to complete the round. Repeat once more.

Straps (Make Two)

Chain 5
SC into 2nd chain from hook, and next 3 chains.
Ch 1, turn, SC in same sp as ch and next 3 stitches.
Repeat previous round until your strap is as long as you like (just make sure they're the same length!)
Using a yarn needle, sew the straps onto your bag.

I love my bag and I hope you guys do too!

Craft Space Revamp!

In case you haven't heard, I'm not the neatest person in the world. So my craft space is ALWAYS messy. Everything has an order.. To me.. But I was sick of having to untangle yarn and search for the right hook I needed. So I decided it was time to revamp my space, and try and make it as user friendly as possible!

Thanks to some Pinterest inspiration I was able to easily and affordably create this little nook in my basement for my yarn and crochet work. I still have a long way to go, but wanted to share a little peek of what I've done so far!

First thing I did was find this over the door shoe organizer at Target on clearance. The pockets are the perfect size for a full skein of yarn, and it holds them perfectly, ready for use! This might have been the best thing I've ever done. You could even hang it in your closet! :O
Then I bought some command hooks and made a sort of clothes line. This displays all my recently finished works and some of my favorite pieces. It helps me keep my motivation on days I don't feel productive. It also helps remind me of what I need to work on!

Then I used some baskets from the dollar store (my favorite place to shop!) and some collapsible storage cubes I had lying around and made a space for extra yarn. The baskets hold my WIP's, helping me to only keep 3 projects going at once (even though I usually have more anyway).

Then I found these metal buckets at Target for $1 each. I grabbed a few and used some of my extra command hooks to hang the buckets above my desk. I originally kept all my hooks, needles, and misc items in a coffee cup on my desk and a little dish, now they're easily accessible, and I still have desk space!
To help keep all my papers and magazines in one place, I grabbed this magazine holder from Big Lots for $2. It's way less intimidating than having a ton of papers stacked on my desk!

The last thing I did was organize the rest of my 'stash'. I'm guilty of getting halfway through something, or even finishing something, and just throwing it in a pile. If anyone wants a bunch of miscellaneous unfinished projects let me know! I've been saving it as scrap yarn, hoping I'll have time to do something with it one day (yeah right!).

So that's what I've accomplished so far. I really hope to get some more organization going on, but for now, this is great for me! If you don't already have a designated space for your crafts, find one! I started with this tiny desk in my basement, and it (embarrassingly) has evolved into my own little yarn sanctuary!

Christmas Gift Crochet Pattern Ideas

Whether you want to admit it or not, Christmas is right around the corner. And for us crafters, that means lots of opportunity for gift making! My favorite thing to do since starting to crochet is make things for family and friends. My Christmas gift list just keeps getting longer, and so I've decided to put all of the patterns I am using for various gifts here!

Most of these patterns will be fairly quick to finish (less than 2-3 hours), so I can make lots of multiples in lots of different colors for everyone! Things for men, women, kids, it's all here. As the weeks get closer to Christmas I'll be adding any extra patterns I find, so be sure to bookmark it and come check back!

Sneak Peek! October 2012

I have so much going on this month, it's been hard for me to keep my head straight this past week! Everywhere I go I get bombarded with Halloween items. Candy, light up skulls, plastic hands with fake blood on them, and all I can think about is how I need to get started making some crochet Halloween goodies!

I've had lots of ideas cooking up in my head this past week, and if you're following me on Facebook, I'm sure you've seen a pic or two of what I'm working on! But in case you don't (in which case you should click here and 'like' me!), I've decided to make a post with some behind the scenes photos.

Newborn Sized Frankenstein Hat

Now you remember that bright green yarn from my last post? I decided to start making use of it by creating this Frankenstein hat! This was my first attempt, so be kind. The scar needs some re working. I have another in the works though, and a pattern coming soon!

Jack-O-Lantern Mug Cozy
Now this just makes me giggle every time I look at it. I've never really tried stitching anything like a mouth on something, so this is a first for me! I think I did pretty well for a first try, but I'm definitely going to do some practice over the next week and hopefully I can make it look a LOT better. (don't mind my messy basement!)

Toddler Owl Hat
I made this owl hat originally for my little guy, but I made it a little too big. You know what that means! I'm listing it for sale in my Etsy shop! Grab it before it's gone!

I've also been working on a pair of knee high socks, the pattern is linked on my Facebook page. Whenever I find a pattern I love or get some quick inspiration, I post it on Facebook first! Also, you can follow me on Pinterest! I'm quite an active member and love to pin things of all kinds so be sure to check that out too! (I also have a special board just for crochet patterns!)

As you can see, I have lots planned this month, and that means free patterns, tips, pictures, and crochet ideas all month long! Are you as excited as I am?!

Feel free to leave a quick tip or note about how you like my blog and crochet work! I love to hear from you all (:

Preparing For Halloween!

I've got to say, now that I have Jude, it puts all the magic back into the holidays. I get excited for Christmas now, not for presents of my own, but to see his face light up when he opens that one toy he's been longing for! (Okay, so maybe they'll be more than one) I get to enjoy the Easter egg hunts, and the best part, Halloween!!

Choosing Jude's costume was hard for me, I didn't want to settle on just anything.. I mean, this is his first Halloween! (His very last FIRST holiday tradition)

During Thanksgiving and Christmas last year it was a blur, lost in sleep deprivation and newborn lovey-ness, so I wanted this last first 'holiday' to be awesome!

Well I've finally decided when I found this on Pinterest! Kevin and I both love the movie 'Up!', and Jude LOVES balloons, and he would look adorable in that outfit! Cheap, Simple, DONE!

What's your little ones Halloween costume going to be?!

Not only have I decided on Jude's costume, but at Walmart tonight I stocked up on some yarn to make some spooky crochet items!! Expect some AWESOME things next week, as well as some spooktacular patterns!
What are you guys doing to get ready for Halloween? I just love Fall so much I can't help but start early!!

Cloud Crochet Pattern

Are you one of the few crocheters who needs to crochet a cloud for some reason or another? Me too. Only when I googled for a pattern, I couldn't find any! So I made my own. But why do I even need to crochet a cloud in the first place?

This morning while browsing Pinterest I found an idea that seemed way too easy not to try myself. An activity board! Really it's just a bunch of wooden animals with magnets on a board, but Jude doesn't know any better. He loves it!

Well of course I can't just leave it plain like this, so I decided to start crocheting all sorts of little things to stick on there. I started with a cloud, since it seemed easiest. I think I'm going to make another one but grey, and add blue yarn hanging down to act as "rain". I'd love to crochet some shapes to put on there also. Jude loves all the new things to play with and check out!

So just in case I wasn't the only one googling how to crochet a cloud, I wrote down the pattern as I made it. If this becomes of use to anyone leave a comment telling me how you like it!

First day of Fall!

Happy first day of Fall!!

This is my favorite time of year. Everything about fall makes me giddy. Apple picking, warm sweaters and scarves, hot cocoa, changing leaves, Thanksgiving (!!)... I could go on all day. But really, what better way to celebrate fall than crocheting something new to wear or use?!

For the past 3 days I have been making these adorable headband/ earwarmers. I got the idea from a pin on Pinterest, and the fact that my sister requested one. When I stumbled upon it I knew I just had to try it!

Since then I have memorized the pattern and can whip one up in about 45 minutes. The pattern for the headband and flower are so simple, even beginners can do it! Here are the few I have come up with so far! I'm enjoying finding different color combinations for the headband/flower.

As you can see color combinations are endless and you can change it up many different ways! What do you think? Would you rock one of these this fall?

Keep an eye out for some for sale in my Etsy shop! If you'd like one in a specific color combination all you have to do is ask! I make all my items to order so everything is custom.

Crochet Candy Corn: Free Pattern!

Guess what everybody?! Its September, the beginning of my favorite season, FALL! The cool breeze, natural colors, and last but not least, Halloween! As a mom, Halloween has a whole new meaning to me now. It means dressing my little guy up in something adorable and showing him off door to door to all my neighbors all whilst receiving free candy that mommy and daddy get to enjoy later. (;

So in my desire to get ready for Halloween I have begun to create small little crochet decor items I can place in random areas around my house. I was never really into decorating before, but Jude makes everything more fun, so I have to. Plus it gives us something new to look at. And since all I see in the stores are fall/halloween (and even some Christmas?!) decorations, I decided to make some of my own!

You can expect a lot more holiday themed patterns coming your way over the next few months, and I am SUPER excited about it! I have plenty of ideas, and feel free to leave me a comment with an idea you have for something I should make!

So in my fall inspired daze I came home from Michaels with these, and then created this adorable little candy corn decoration!

This cute sized Candy Corn is the perfect small decoration for any home! I have mine sitting on my kitchen table next to some other fall/halloween inspired things. Get creative and use different sized hooks and yarn for different sized candy corn!

Just a little crochet inspiration...

It's been a few weeks since I've done a work in progress (WIP) post. Like almost any crochet or knitter (or crafter!) out there, I almost always am working on more than one thing at a time. What can I say, I get bored easily!

Most of the time though, I start something and never finish it! This is why I force myself to take pictures and document what I'm working on. The pictures also serve as inspiration for future progress, and a log of what I've worked on so far!

I thought I might give you all a little inspiration with some pictures of what I've been working on. As always, you can request any of these items for me to make in any color, and I can create a custom listing for you on Etsy.com. You can also check out my shop Here to see what else I've got for sale!

My main focus has been preparing for Christmas time and the Fall/Winter season. This means hats, scarves, and cute little gifting ideas! I also started a granny square blanket for my couch. Should be done by the time fall comes around!

One of the first things I made was a clutch like my previous one. Only this time I used cotton yarn and made up my own flower. This is going to be a gift for one of my family members for Christmas!

Next is a granny square I'm working on. I want to make it as big as possible so I'll have a throw for our couch this fall. The colors were the first four I picked out of my stash. I love the cranberry and pumpkin colors!

I also made another clutch like my previous one. I love this yarn and had a ton of it left, so I figured I'd make another! Just needs some buttons.

Here I have a set of fingerless gloves and a matching scarf ready for gifting! I wonder who will be lucky enough to get it (;

I've been playing around with granny squares a lot this week, and I came up with a scarf idea! Here is 3 squares stitched together and another 3 waiting to be attatched!

And last but not least, a pair of fingerless gloves I've made. I might keep these for myself though, I'm loving the multicolors on this one!

So what have you been working on this week? Leave a comment below!

Shell Stitch Fingerless Gloves Free Pattern

Fingerless gloves have become a new trend (to me at least) since I started crocheting. They're cute, warm, and don't cover your fingers, so those of you with touch screen phones will still have access without taking your gloves off!

This pattern is designed with simplicity in mind. It uses only the single crochet, so it's perfect even for complete beginners! I have never made any gloves before these, so I just kind of winged it on how to put them together. Let me know if there is an easier way, as I'm still a beginner myself!

Assembly

Bring each side (lengthwise) together, and SC them together the long way until you reach the base of your thumb. Turn it right side out (the seam is on the inside) and try on your glove. It should look a little something like this.

Turn it back inside out. Now we will make the thumb hole.
SC down the side closest to you (leaving the other unworked). When you get to the end, join the other side with a slip stitch, creating a hole for your thumb. It might help if you try on the glove as you go, making sure it fits snugly around your hand.

Now working along the top edge of the cuff, do *3 SC, skip next 2 stitches*. repeat around to beginning of row.
Slip stitch down to the thumb hole.
SC down the edge you didn't SC down earlier. End with a slip stitch at the bottom of the thumb hole and fasten off.
