Market Bag - Free Crochet Pattern

Hello my fellow hookers!!

Today I have for you this very simple, sturdy market bag, which is perfect for those spring, summer, and fall trips to the farmers market! I always enjoy picking out fresh, seasonal produce to later make into healthy meals for myself and my family. So why not have a light, breathable bag to carry all my goodies?!

If you know how to single crochet and chain, you can easily make this! But watch out, soon your friends and family will want one too!

Market Bag Pattern

Materials
6 MM (Size J) Hook
2-3 Skeins of Lily Sugar and Creme Cotton Yarn

Notes: After the beginning chain, you will single crochet along both sides of the chain, creating a round. Beginning at row 6, you will work in rounds, without joining. Place a stitch marker in that spot to remember where you started. The handles are worked separately then sewn onto the bag. If you have any
questions please feel free to ask!

Chain 31

Round 1: SC in second chain from hook, and each ch across (30 SC). make 3 SC in the last ch, and continue to SC around the opposite side of the chain. Make 2 SC in last st and sl st to first SC to complete the round.
Round 2: Ch 1, SC in each st around. sl st to first sc.
Round 3: Repeat round 2
Round 4: *Ch 6, skip 2 st, slip stitch into next st.* Repeat around.

Round 5: At the end of round 4, instead of sl st into the next st, you will sl st into the first chain 6 sp. ch 6 and continue to sl st into the next ch 6 space.
Continue doing this until your bag is the length you desire. Keep in mind, as the bag gets filled it will stretch (this is why i use cotton yarn, less stretch).

Finishing round: Ch 1, SC 5 times in each chain space. Slip stitch to beginning chain to complete the round. Repeat once more.

Straps (Make Two)

Chain 5
SC into 2nd chain from hook, and next 3 chains.
Ch 1, turn, SC in same sp as ch and next 3 stitches.
Repeat previous round until your strap is as long as you like (just make sure they're the same length!)
Using a yarn needle, sew the straps onto your bag.

I love my bag and I hope you guys do too!

  2. I'm not sure that I understand after round 4 where you do not join? Where are you doing the skip 2 and slip stitch to next?

    1. I revised the pattern, I didn't realize the way i first wrote it was really confusing! Instead of sl st into the next st, you're going to continue sl st into the next ch 6 space. let me know if that helps!

  3. I made this bag and used it for the first time today. I LOVE it! My canvas bags from the stores are so old they are falling apart, so I made this instead of buying a new one. I like it SO much better. Thank you.

    1. When tpu are at the end of the row you will continue on with a slip vstich in the center of last roll and continue this way till you reach the length you want your bag.

  5. I had trouble understanding the end of round 4 also. I figured out that when you reach the end of round 4, you chain 6 and slip stitch into the first chain 6 space of round 4. That begins round 5, and you'll just continue to chain six and slip stitch into the next chain six space all the way around and keep going till your bag is as high as you want it! That's what I did anyway, and mine looks like the picture! It's a nice, easy pattern! I like that I cam do it while watching a movie! Very easy and works up fast!

  6. I'm doing round 4, and all I have is an oval base with ruffles. What did I do wrong?

  7. Once you get the bag to the desired height, just join your chain 6 with a slip stitch like you normally would and then do two rounds of single crochet. Make the handles and attach them.

  8. How many ounces is your "one skein?" They come in everything from 1.75 oz to 1 lb. One skein is pretty vague.

  10. I started this pattern, but I am really confused. I have chained 31 in the first step. I am on round 2/3 but the whole length of the thing is smaller than my hand! Shouldn't I have changed 60 or something in the first step to make it bad length? I wish someone could help me with this, I wanted to make this as a Christmas present but now I feel like I am in over my head...

  11. Thank you! Made this with cotton yarn, and it turned out great! I did one handle instead of 2.

  12. I did the recommended starting chains and it grew a little with the rounds but it was still to small, so i redid it with 51 chains. I also went around 5 times, for a total of 10 rows

    1. the size is totally up to you! you can make it as wide or as tall as you want by adjusting how many beginning chains you do and how many rows you add.

  17. Size J hook will give you a larger than regular stitch (G). Sugar & Spice is 100% Cotton yarn normally in 2-oz skeins. Hope this information helps.
